This activity could easily be used as a starter for a topic on minibeasts, or as a bit of light relief.

The PowerPoint consists of eight different minibeasts, each of which is introduced only by their names in languages other than English, together with a literal translation of that name.

Suitable for whole-class discussion as well as group work, or even as an individual student quiz, pupils will have to draw on their knowledge of minibeasts and their habitat to “name this minibeast”. In the process, they will encounter 23 languages other than English in a playful way.

The activity could be extended creatively by encouraging students to come up with their own names for minibeasts, and would form a great precursor to the Minibeast Survey Activity.
